My Imperfect Venus

Project Type

Painting

Date

April 2023

Artist Statement

Grappling with the idea of perfectionism and its place within my identity, I have been exploring the concept of imperfection as a means of challenging societal pressures to conform to unrealistic standards of beauty and achievement.

In my painting of myself embracing a Venus statue while gazing at my abstract and imaginary reflection in a mirror, I sought to deconstruct the notion of perfection in beauty standards by asking: what is truly perfect? Is it the Venus statue, widely considered a symbol of beauty, despite her lack of arms? Or is it myself, flawed and human, yet capable of finding beauty in the imperfect?

Through「My Imperfect Venus」, I aspire to spark a dialogue around the concept of perfectionism and its impacts on women's collective identities. By embracing our flaws and appreciating our uniqueness, we can move beyond the constraints of perfectionism and really be grateful of who we are. I believe that imperfection is the very essence of perfectionism. It is in our flaws and individuality that we find our true beauty as human beings, especially women.
